Pearls are an organic gem grown in oysters: the wonderful gift of the oceans. The majority of pearls are cultured which means human assisted. Weather pearls are 100% natural or cultured they are both susceptible to chemical damage. Most faceted gemstones are impervious to chemical exposure. Pearls are subject to damage from strong chemicals such as perfume, cleaning agents, and even human sweat. These beauties need extra care and attention. The rule is last on and first off. In other words when getting ready to go out put perfume on first, then wait a few moments before putting your pearls on. Alcohol is a common base for most perfumes and very dangerous to pearls. The alcohol penetrates the Nacre (the outer coating of the pearl) and causes pitting.

When cleaning your pearls on your own use a mild hand soap and warm water; scrub as if you were washing your hands. It’s okay, and even suggested to do this, several times a year. Should your pearl strand knots become frayed or you are able to slide your pearls between knots, it’s time to restring them. The highest amount of exposure to a strand breaking is at the clasp. If this connection is questionable, loose, or damaged, consult your local jeweler.

Pearls should be a staple in every woman’s attire, worn with a little black dress on a special night out, with a basic blouse and jeans, or anything in between. Pearl jewelry gives an understated class: not trying too hard but still elegant. Every woman should own a strand. Like black pumps, a brown belt or diamond studs, they tend to work well with everything. Anytime or anyplace, pearls speak volumes to the understanding of fashion. They are always in style!
